What conditions does vascular health cover?

Vascular diseases include a broad spectrum of conditions that affect blood flow in arteries and veins, and microcirculation, often with significant consequences for patients’ quality of life. While vascular disorders can present in many forms, their impact is frequently progressive and underestimated, especially in the early stages.

Vascular diseases are a diverse group of conditions that affect the body’s network of blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and disrupt healthy blood flow.[1] Common vascular conditions include:

  • chronic venous disease
  • peripheral artery disease
  • deep vein thrombosis
  • diabetic angiopathies.[2]

Chronic venous disease can cause visible changes, such as spider veins, venous ulcers and edemas, as well as non-visible symptoms such as fatigue, cramps, and itching or painful skin.[3] These symptoms can significantly reduce quality of life — from limiting mobility to disturbing sleep and daily activities.[4]

Non-visible signs often have the greater impact on quality of life in the early stages, while visible signs tend to become the primary concern as the disease progresses.[5] For chronic venous disease in particular, early diagnosis and intervention are essential to prevent progression of the disease.[6] However, many patients remain undiagnosed in the early stages, missing the opportunity for timely treatment and better long-term outcomes.[7]

Risk factors for chronic venous disease development include genetic predisposition, women, pregnancy, increasing age, prolonged standing, obesity, and smoking.

Endothelial dysfunction plays a key role in the pathogenesis of CVD, as glycocalyx disruption and endothelial impairment contribute to disease initiation and progression.[7a]
